MOUNTAIN MOSES AND

MONASTERY ST. CATHERINE (35$)

Mount Sinai (or Mount Moses) is the most famous mountain on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. The Bible mentions that on this mountain, God appeared to Moses and gave the Ten Commandments. On the top of Mount Moses are the remains of the chapel of the Holy Trinity, founded in 363 and completed in 530 under Emperor Justinian. In 1934, the ancient stones of the chapel were used to build a small mosque. It is located above the cave where Moses spent 40 days. When the darkness of the night turns blue, then the first sunbeam finally touches blue and sharp teeth, you see with amazement what abysses and gorges are around. In the north is the temple of the prophet Elijah with a well and the chapel of the Virgin for Orthodox pilgrims. The foot of Mount Moses «protects» the temple of St. Catherine. Mount Moses has a height of 2285 meters above sea level, you can climb it from the monastery in two hours. Two paths are possible when climbing to the top. The first is 3750 steps carved into the rocks by the monks. The second one was laid back in the 19th century, you can even climb it on horseback, it is considered easier.
